Inspiration

For my final media product, I have drawn inspiration from the following opening titles of the psychological thriller genre. The two videos rely heavily on sound to build up the atmosphere and set the mood of the film.

I especially like the opening of Black Swan because it starts off very calm and elegant, because the movement of the chalk that glides across the large sheet replicates the fluency of the ballet dance. However, the music picks up the pace and builds tension, which makes the viewer want to watch more of the film. Furthermore, the music could also reflect the downfall of the protagonist because towards the end, it becomes more dense, and the frustration of the character is seen through the breaking and cracking of the chalk on the paper.

The opening credits of The Sixth Sense also suggest an ambiguous nature of the film. The use of "ghostly colours": black and white, emphasises this idea, especially with the credits gradually appearing and disappearing. I really like how the names that appear fade in and out again, because this conveys an ethereal feeling, and this would compliment my film opening because it would symbolise the shadow or "reflection" the female character is 'haunted' by. Furthermore, when the credits emerge on the screen, a peculiar and eerie sound starts to play. The music mirrors the credit titles because when a name appears, the music gradually becomes higher pitched, and when the name fades away, the music does so as well. The uncanny music conveys the creepy nature of the film, and suggests that the film will be mentally disturbing. When the title 'The Sixth Sense' appears, the pace of the music quickens and becomes more abrupt, and is followed by a repetition of the title. This could imply that seeing things more than once may not by obvious at first.

I have made a note of using sinister music because this will compliment my film and make it easier to distinguish the genre. As well this, I plan record sounds such as the pencil drop and the female character flipping through the pages of her journal as this will add realism to the film.
