Story to Screen: Production

Continuing from my previous post, this is what we did during our filming process.

FILMING
Before we started filming, Sublah and I spent a couple of minutes putting makeup on John G to make him appear like an old man. Sublah used face paint to create wrinkles and deep eye bags, and I put talcum powder on John's hair to make him look older. After preparing our character, we proceeded to film in the sixth form common room - the current location.

PROBLEMS AND CHANGES
On our first filming session, we filmed we the camcorder (the one we used to film for our Napoleon Dynamite opening sequence). However, we later discovered that the SD card did not work, so we had to re-film all of the shots on Adriana's camera. Furthermore, once I transferred all the files from Adriana's camera to the laptop, the files we .mov, therefore it would not work when I tried to edit on Adobe Premiere Pro. To counter this, I downloaded a software called Any Files Converter, which was recommended to me by John, and this allowed me to convert the .mov file to .mp4.

During our second filming session (when we had to re-film all the shots), we realised that some of the shots from the storyboard seemed too unexpected. So, we added extra shots:
1) A shot below Nissie to see her running
2) A shot from behind Nissie that shows her deciding which room to go in before entering the one where John was in
3) A shot of John looking out of the window, then wipes away his tear when he hears that someone has entered the room

Adriana and I thought that by parallel editing (cross-cutting) it would make our story flow better, because the audience would be able to understand how Anna came into the scene. Furthermore, it would add interest and thrill to an otherwise boring sequence.

  1. This is a really good post outlining what problems you had faced while filming and how you overcame them. It was great to do John's makeup, as this was my first time doing it on someone other than myself.
