Media Representation

"The media do not just offer us a transparent 'window on the world'  but a mediated version of the world. They don't just present reality, they represent it." — Buckingham (2003)

METAPHORS:
In our lesson today, we viewed a slideshow showing different images and discussed the different symbolism in it. The question we got asked was:

What single image would you use to symbolise you and your status as a media student?

My answer was: a light bulb. I felt that this is what represented me as a media student because every time we have a lesson, I light up (because I enjoy the subject) and also because I am able to generate ideas, which also helps me in my other subjects; such as English Literature.

However, when we moved onto our next task and discussed Gauntlett's (2007) research method, I changed my mind. We created a model using LEGO® to represent ourselves, because Gauntlett suggests that this approach makes use of a metaphor and by building metaphorical models of our identities, it provides a better sense of how we view ourselves.
This is what I created:

I came to the conclusion that this model is what represents my status as a media students because:
1. When a river flows, it picks up things on the way; just like my learning - it is continuous and I gradually build up my understanding.
2. The river on my model is not straight as this represents my understanding; it does not just flow from one straight path; instead there are a lot of other 'turns' and 'stops' which shows that I take my time when I learn something new
3. The crocodile symbolises a potential obstacle

  1. I really like this post Rica - you have a clear understanding of what we did and why. Please credit your own photos. Include details about where you might go next; how you will research logos and what you might develop as your own.
